I'm impressed that the lowlands of Mar Vista managed to put together public access Wifi.
It doesn't surprise me that Santa Monica city has failed miserably to do anything similar, despite many public announcements about "bridging the digital divide", or something like that.
Is there any momentum in Santa Monica for the same type of network like OpenMV?
Would City Hall oppose connecting to the city fiber loop, because they already have their own non-working plan? If we built a Meraki Me$h network on private Time Warner and Verizon circuits, how do you address the acceptable use policy ("no sharing")?
I'd like to see OpenWiFi brought to the Pico Neighborhood. I'm not an RF engineer, but I'd speculate that one 802.11n array placed on the roof of the SMC "Tech" Building on Pico Boulevard, and another on the roof of the administration building at 2714 pico, would cover most everything south of the freeway.
Hi Rob, we have setup a sharing program with Verizon that allows residents and businesses to split a high-speed fiber optic line (Fios) with their neighbors. We would probably not would need the city's fiber loop as Fios is pretty cheap. And yes, participation of local businesses is really important to get good antenna locations. Would love to talk more and hear your suggestions about others who may be interested in making Open Wi-Fi happen in Santa Monica!
